Redesigned World Cup

The World Cup has been redesigned, because it was an unexciting event most players:

  • Most teams were eliminated during the group stage.
  • In most groups it was obvious which teams will advance to the knockout stage.

The World Cup might become a regular event every second or third month. The second World Cup starts shortly after the first one, because of the redesign.

Group Stage Replaced By Swiss Pairings

The group stage has been replaced by a Swiss-system tournament. The Swiss-system is the best and most popular tournament format for everything with a big number of participants. You can read about the Swiss-system in detail here.

Swiss-system in a nutshell:

  • In each round all teams play against another team with a similar number of points.
  • Teams are not paired against opponents they have previously played.
  • The system tries to avoid matching teams of the same guild against each other.
  • Teams left over receive a bye: they do not play that round but are awarded the points for a win.
  • Teams with a match score of 0 are regarded as withdrawn. They are removed from the tournament and receive no rewards. When many teams withdraw the number of Swiss rounds may need to be reduced.
  • The Top 8 teams advance to the knockout stage.

Other World Cup Changes

  • Teams can now have up to 7 members.
  • Replays of other teams are now available once a round is over.
  • The level of your castle heart now determines which division you can join:
    • Division I: Level 6 – 10
    • Division II: Level 4 – 7
    • Division III: Level 1 – 5
    • Reason: This change should ensure that strong players don’t steamroll lower division.

Other Changes

  • From now on the dungeons reopen when the season ends.
  • New players can now attack the dungeon that is already open.
  • The game now caches data on your device to reduce the amount of transferred data by up to 90%!

NEW: World Cup

The World Cup is a competition contested by teams of up to 5 players. Only members of the same guild can create a team. The number of teams per guild is not limited. Recruits and players without a guild cannot participate. The registration stage for the first World Cup will begin on July 2nd! The World Cup might become a regular event every second or third month.

Rewards

Teams can win an award, a special looking witch card, 21 days premium time and up to 3,000 Mana. Premium time and Mana and will be equally divided among all team members.

Group Stage

Each team is randomly assigned to a group. All teams try to achieve the highest possible score in three dungeons. Only the highest score per team per dungeon counts. The top two teams from each group advance to the knockout stage.

Knockout Stage

The knockout stage is a single-elimination tournament in which two teams play each other. In the first knockout round the winner of each group plays against the runner-up of another group. After this the winners of each knockout round play each other in another round until there is only one team left. During the finals the losers of the semi-finals also play for third-place.

In all knockout matches the teams try to achieve the highest possible score in their opponent’s dungeon. The layout of the dungeons is the same for both teams, but the highest level rooms of the team members are used for the construction of the dungeon.

Only the highest score per team counts.

Divisions

When creating a team you have to choose a division. Division I offers the most rewards but the dungeons are the toughest and the competition is the strongest there.

An achievement for participating in the World Cup has been added .

Castles of computer opponents now look different than player castles. With the next update the wooden castle skin and an undead castle skin will become available for purchase.

The awards are displayed in the public player profile.

Arcanox Version 680 Beta

The next Arcanox update is almost ready to be released, but experience the World Cup needs some more testing. Everyone is invited to join the open beta test!

NEW: World Cup

Google Gamer ID

When your Arcanox castle is connected to Google+ and you start the game, you might see this prompt since a few days, weeks or months:

Google has introduced the Gamer ID to detach the Google+ profile from Google Play, because many people don’t like to see all their Google+ friends the games they play. This means more privacy for you.

That’s why I recommend to pick a name and click on “Sign In”. You have to create the Gamer ID only once and not for every single game.

New Rooms: Shrines

Shrines

  • In combat shrines have the chance to add their own enchantment to up to a maximum of four defenders.
  • Additional enchantments disappear when the shrine is destroyed.
  • There are three different shrines:
    • Shrine of the Barricades (available with level 8)
    • Shrine of the Cannons (available with level 9)
    • Shrine of the Guards (available with level 10)
  • Some enchantments cannot be combined. E.g. fire + ice, curse + fire
    • When a defender is randomly selected for the additional enchantment, but the enchantments cannot be combined, the additional enchantment is omitted.
  • Building and upgrading a shrine always costs 600,000 Gold and takes 4 days 22 hours.
  • Shrines are always active, even when they are under construction.

New: Pick Your Opening Hand

  • In the dungeons you can now select cards for your opening hand.
  • This means you can always play dungeon decks with up to 14 cards in perfect order.
  • Use of this feature is optional. When you select nothing your opening hand will be random.

New: Protected Stored Gold After Defeat

  • From now on the guild tournament reward will be distributed based on the weighted score of each guild member.

Arcanox Dungeons: Problems & Planned Solutions

The dungeons are the best part of Arcanox for some players, but by far not for anyone. Some of the reasons for this are problems I want to solve with the upcoming update. In this post I’ll try to explain the these problems and how I plan to fix them. These are not the patch notes for the upcoming update. The update will contain a lot more changes and new stuff.

Dungeon Problems

Problem 1: Dungeons as a Chore

Several players told me, that they think the dungeons are a great idea, but they cannot enjoy them. They feel forced to copy the solutions of their guild mates and borrow their cards instead of trying the dungeons on their own and using the replays only as an inspiration. They not only have no fun in the dungeons but perceive them as a chore and feel highly dependent on their guild mates.

There are multiple reasons for this:

  1. Copying a solution with borrowed cards is for many players the easiest and fastest way to achieve a high dungeon score.
  2. Players want to achieve at least 500 dungeon points on each stage, because of the Mana reward.
  3. Players want to be “good guild members”, which means contributing lots of dungeon score and guild coins regularly.
  4. Some guilds require their members to achieve a certain score. Otherwise they are threatened to get kicked from the guild.
  5. Members of the top 3 guilds want to be in the internal top 10 because of the guild tournament reward.

Even when these players realize they have no fun in the dungeons with the borrow and copy strategy, it is hard for them to stop doing it, because it is so effective.

Problem 2: Borrow & Copy Exploit Accounts

Top dungeon players can easily create additional accounts that achieve 2500+ dungeon scores. The steps are:

  1. Create a new account.
  2. Use all rubies from the achievements to upgrade the guild library.
  3. Borrow strong cards for each dungeon stage from the main account or other guild members.

These accounts reach the top 50 on the dungeon ladder within 2 – 3 weeks. Right now there are at least 5 of them on the monthly top 50 dungeon ladder. When they are a member of one of the top 3 guilds they can even take away the guild tournament rewards from players who played for several months. This almost happened last month.

Arcanox Trophy Balancing Reverted

The trophy balancing change from version 651 has been reverted with a small game-server update. Attackers now again lose only around 25 trophies instead of 50 trophies.

Logically the change made sense but thanks to your feedback I realized that losing too many trophies with a single defeat feels really bad.

Instead, changes to the matchmaking algorithm are planned to improve the multiplayer match quality.
